application. It is much less desirable than the newer worker process isolation mode described
below.
IIS 5.0 isolation mode does not provide the ability to take advantage of application recycling or
application pools. As Figure 43 shows, no Application Pools folder appears when a server is
configured with IIS 5.0 isolation mode.

Worker Process Isolation Mode
Worker process isolation mode is the completely new, architected process model of IIS 6.0 and is
the preferred setting on all computers. This mode allows you to run each virtual directory in its
own isolated process if you want. In this mode, processes run under the NetworkService account
by default instead of the LocalSystem account. The NetworkService account is granted far fewer
rights. As a result, a system is less likely to become comprised when running in this mode.
In worker process isolation mode, you can change your identity to any one of the three built in
accounts—LocalSystem, LocalService, NetworkService—or a user of your choice. If you create
an account of your own, make sure that you add that account to the new IIS_WPG group, the
group used by access control lists for IIS resources.
Configuring the IIS Isolation Mode
Figures 44 and 45 show the differences between the two isolation modes.
