2003 White Paper
Windows NT 4.0 Server Upgrade Guide 125
considerable. Exchange Server 2003 provides better backup tools and server consolidation
features than previous versions. Used in combination with Windows Server 2003, Exchange 2003
supports the new Volume Shadow Copy service technology, a feature that enables administrators
to mirror the disk on which the Exchange data store resides, performing quick backups with no
downtime.
Current versions of Exchange provide no built-in support for restoring a single lost or corrupted
mailbox. An administrator must either reload the entire server or rely on third-party products to
complete this task. Exchange Server 2003 provides single mailbox restores as a built-in feature.
This single feature can greatly reduce the disaster recovery process when a single mailbox is lost
or corrupted.
Exchange 5.5 supports a single messaging database (Store) to store saved messages for all
mailboxes. The database continues to function as the store grows, but becomes very difficult to
work with in a disaster recovery situation. Exchange Server 2003 provides for multiple messaging
stores, which enable a single, large store to be broken into several smaller more manageable
stores. These smaller stores support better disaster recovery scenarios and help minimize the
impact of a recovery on the organization as a whole, because mailboxes are distributed across
multiple stores.
Deployment Tools
Exchange Server 2003 is designed to coexist with both Exchange 2000 and Exchange 5.5.
Microsoft is providing an extensive suite of deployment tools for Exchange 2003. These tools
make planning and executing an upgrade to Exchange Server 2003 easier than previous
upgrades. The tools are particularly useful for organizations upgrading away from Exchange 5.x
with or without Active Directory. They can be used to inspect the current Exchange environment
and detect current configuration items that could impede the upgrade process.
The Exchange Server Deployment Tools consist of a series of tools and documentation that lead
you through the following process:
Planning the deployment.
Preparing Active Directory by using ForestPrep and DomainPrep.
Installing Active Directory Connector (ADC) and ADC tools.
Installing Exchange.
Completing deployment and moving mailboxes and public folders.
Using ADC
One of the toughest tasks in upgrading Exchange 5.5 to Exchange 2000 or Exchange 2003 is the
setup of ADC. ADC provides necessary communication from the Exchange 5.5 directory service
and directory database to the Active Directory database used by both Exchange 2000 and
Exchange 2003. In earlier versions, ADC was easy to configure incorrectly, which caused upgrade
issues.
