Figure 31. Resolution priority among referral zones
Figure 31 assumes that a Windows NT 4.0–based client has a name client1. A Windows XP-
based client belongs to the mydomain.microsoft.com. If the Windows XP-based client has
received a wins.mydomain.microsoft.com. suffix with its DHCP configuration, then in an attempt to
resolve an unqualified name client1, it first tries the mydomain.microsoft.com. suffix (that is,
client1.mydomain.microsoft.com). If that attempt fails, it tries wins.mydomain.microsoft.com (that
is, client1.wins.mydomain.microsoft.com).
When the DNS server authorized for the wins.mydomain.microsoft.com zone receives the query, it
cannot resolve the requested name. However, it is configured to use WINS lookup, so it submits a
query for client1 to the WINS server. The WINS server containing appropriate registration returns
the host IP address to the DNS server, and then passes it to the Windows XP-based client.
HGF Properties has a few Windows NT 4.0 Workstation clients and even a few Windows 98
clients, so WINS is necessary until these clients are upgraded. When the WINS service is finally
removed, it is a good idea to shut down the service first. That way, an administrator can watch the
event logs for unexpected failures. If shutting down the service causes a failure, the problem can
either be researched and solved, or the service can be turned back on. After the service has been
shut down for a period of time and it seems as if no problems are noticed, the service can then be
removed completely.
Remaining BDCs
Each of the five remaining BDCs needs to be upgraded. There are two BDCs in Los Angeles and
one each in Irvine, Hayward, and Anaheim. The first two servers to upgrade are those in Los
Angeles. It is decided to upgrade HGFBDC first, because it includes the WINS and DHCP
services.
The server’s name, HGFBDC, poses an interesting problem. After it is upgraded to a Windows
Server 2003 domain controller, it is no longer a BDC. All domain controllers in Active Directory are
