Windows NT 4.0 Server Upgrade Guide 109
Several other IIS 6.0 performance and reliability features enable Web server consolidation,
including the following:
Health monitoring. IIS 6.0 periodically checks the status of an application pool and automatically
restart it if Web sites and applications within that pool fail. As a result, application availability and
overall Web infrastructure reliability are increased.
Application pools. IIS 6.0 application pools are a convenient means of administering a set of
Web sites and applications. Application pools increase reliability, because errors in one
application pool cannot cause another application pool—or the server itself—to fail.
Automatic process recycling. IIS 6.0 automatically stops and restarts faulty Web sites and
applications based on a flexible set of criteria—including CPU utilization and memory
consumption—while queuing requests.
Rapid-fail disabling. IIS 6.0 helps protect server and other applications by automatically disabling
Web sites and applications that fail too often within a short amount of time.
IIS 6.0 Manageability
Several important enhancements have been made in IIS 6.0 that provide new flexibility in how
Web server infrastructure is managed, including:
XML-based configuration file. Configuration data is stored as XML statements in a plain text file
that can be edited using standard text editing tools and easily integrated with other system
management tools.
Edit while running. This feature enables manual or programmatic changes to the XML-based
server configuration file while the server is running and without requiring a system reboot or
recompilation.
Command-line administration and scripting. Many common management tasks can be
performed on single or multiple servers that are local or remote using a command-line interface.
IIS 6.0 also has a complete scripting environment for automating common system administration
tasks from the command line without having to use a graphical user interface.
Support for Windows Management Instrumentation (WMI). WMI programming interfaces offer
flexible ways to manage the Web infrastructure.
These features can reduce the amount of time it takes to manage larger server workloads and
reduce staffing costs.
In addition, the IIS 6.management can be managed through the Windows System Resource
Manager (WSRM). WSRM enables an administrator to set application resource consumption
policies (for CPU and memory consumption, for example), to manage computer resources
according to policies, to apply policies on a date/time schedule, and to generate, store, view, and
export accounting records.
IIS 6.0 Security
Security is a critical aspect of server consolidation plans. With this release, IIS 6.0 reflects a focus
on security. For example, in early 2002, the development work of all Windows engineers—more
