• Provides administrative groupings of objects (for administrative purposes).

Keeping these purposes in mind, you can now define the OUs, users, and groups based on the

structure of your organization. It is worth mentioning that there is a big difference between OUs

and groups. As mentioned, OUs are used to organize objects for administrative purposes, such as

delegation. However, OUs cannot be used to apply permissions or rights. Groups are used to

apply permissions and rights. OUs can be defined based on a number of items, including

organizational function or physical location.

The end result of an OU plan depicts the following:

• A diagram of OU structures for each domain.

• A list of users in each OU.

• A list of groups in each domain.

Designing a Site Topology Plan

Sites are typically used to represent physical locations separated by slow wide area network

(WAN) links. Creating a site topology includes performing the following tasks:

• Defining sites

• Placing domain controllers

• Defining a replication strategy

• Configuring bridgehead servers

• Placing global catalog servers

• Placing operations masters

A site topology plan should include a site diagram with placement of domain controllers, locations

of operations masters, types of site links, and documentation regarding the types of site links and

their corresponding configurations.

Connectivity with Windows NT Server 4.0, Windows 2000, and Windows

Server 2003

Domain and forest functionality, introduced in Windows Server 2003 Active Directory, are

extensions of mixed and native modes for Windows 2000-based networks. They provide a way to

enable domain-wide or forest-wide Active Directory features in a network environment.

You can raise the functional level of a domain to enable new Active Directory features that apply

to that domain only. There are four domain functional levels:

• Windows 2000 mixed

• Windows 2000 native

• Windows Server 2003 interim

• Windows Server 2003
