Windows NT 4.0 Server Upgrade Guide 75
Keep in mind that PDCs and BDCs in Windows NT Server 4.0 can never be demoted. The
administrator runs DCPROMO and performs the demotion process. After a server becomes a
member server again, its name can be changed at any time.
Global Catalogs
The administrators use a similar procedure to systematically upgrade all remaining BDCs at the
various locations. Each domain controller should also be configured as a global catalog server,
which is a server that maintains a directory database queried by applications and clients needing
to locate an object in a forest. The global catalog is hosted on one or more domain controllers and
contains a partial replica of every domain directory partition in the forest. These partial replicas
include replicas of every object in the forest, as Figure 32 shows: the attributes most frequently
used in search operations and the attributes required to locate a full replica of the object.

Results of the Upgrade
HGF Properties is now a long way toward completing their upgrade to Windows Server 2003 and
Active Directory. Although there is more work to be done, such as upgrading the mail server to
Exchange 2003 when it is released, the most challenging portions of the upgrade have been
addressed.
Figure 33 shows the new Active Directory structure of the domain.
