After accepting the licensing agreement, the user must enter the Product Key as shown:

Next, the user is prompted about the compatibility issues found earlier when running System

Compatibility Checker. After the Continue button is selected, Setup is finished with the

information collection tasks and continues to follow the roadmap found on the left panel of the

setup screens. If necessary, Setup locates the latest setup files and starts the routine to prepare

the installation. During this process, the sample server reboots itself and continues the process

without user intervention. No more prompts for information appear until the upgrade is complete.

The upgrade finishes in one hour and fifteen minutes. The computer is set as a PDC, so after it

reboots, Setup automatically launches the Active Directory Setup Wizard. For more information

about upgrading to Active Directory, see Appendix A: Sample Active Directory Upgrade

later in

this guide.

Results of the Sample Windows NT Upgrade

Here are some notes worth mentioning:

• The Intel network adapter was automatically detected and worked as expected. The Kingston

network card was not detected and did not work after the upgrade.

• Before the installation, the \Winnt folder was 262 MB. After the installation, it was 1.45 GB. This

size increase is an important consideration, because drive C of most Windows NT servers is 4 GB

or less. Disk space may be a deciding factor in whether to perform a new installation or perform

an upgrade. Bear in mind that this example was not a production server; it had almost the

maximum available disk space on the drive C partition. Production Windows NT servers that have

been in service for some time typically do not have a large amount of free space on the boot

partition.
