Windows NT 4.0 Server Upgrade Guide 42
SQL Server 7.0 ran normally after upgrade, even though it is not officially supported on Windows
Server 2003.
All drivers, with the exception of the one network card, were automatically detected and worked as
expected, including the SCSI adapter, Intel network adapter, and ATI video drivers.
This sample upgrade did not test all possible services and was designed to show only a typical
upgrade scenario with common applications and services. Other services such as WINS, DHCP,
and Terminal Services, and so on were not tested.
Exchange Server failed to start after the upgrade. If this were a production server, the mail server
would no longer function. The Exchange System Attendant service and the Exchange Directory
Service are the only Exchange services that restarted. All the Exchange services maintained their
service account information, but most failed to start. When an attempt is made to start the
Exchange Information Store, errors appear in Event Viewer as Figure 20 shows. To display
detailed information, double-click an error.

In this sample upgrade, the lesson is to pay particular attention to the system compatibility
checker and research possible issues before the upgrade. For example, the detailed view of
Event ID 5000 (one of the errors shown in Figure 20) looks like this:
