Windows NT 4.0 Server Upgrade Guide 136
Appendix A: Sample Active Directory Upgrade
This appendix continues the sample upgrade scenario provided earlier in this document (see
Sample In-Place Upgrade for a Windows NT PDC
earlier in this guide). The steps below explain
how to finish the upgrade by upgrading the Windows NT 4.0 domain to an Active Directory
domain. This process is the first action item after the upgrade of a Windows NT 4.0 domain
controller is complete.
The Active Directory Installation Wizard simplifies the tasks associated with upgrading a Windows
NT domain to Windows Server 2003 Active Directory. Active Directory Installation Wizard installs
and configures domain controllers, which provide network users and computers access to the
Active Directory service. Any member server (except those with restrictive license agreements)
can be promoted to domain controllers using the Active Directory Installation Wizard.
There is more than one way to start the wizard, but the preferred method is to type DCPROMO on
the Run command line. However, the Active Directory Installation Wizard also automatically starts
after upgrading a Windows NT 4.0 domain controller.
The figure below shows the wizard that automatically starts after the upgrade of a PDC.
