Windows NT 4.0 Server Upgrade Guide 9
Upgrade the computer to run an operating system that can be upgraded to Windows Server
2003.
Perform a clean installation of Windows Server 2003 on those computers.
Upgrading with Exchange 2000
Because of significant changes in Windows Server 2003 security and other features, Exchange
Server 2003 is the only Exchange version capable of running on this operating system. However,
at the time this guide was written, Exchange Server 2003 was not yet available. (It will be released
later in 2003.) Moreover, Exchange 2000 cannot be installed or run on a server that is running
Windows Server 2003. Exchange 2000 must be installed on a server that is running
Windows 2000 Server. Fortunately, this platform—Exchange 2000 and Windows 2000—can
coexist in a Windows Server 2003 environment.
If you are considering whether to upgrade your Windows–based servers to Windows Server 2003,
rest assured that doing so will not disrupt an existing messaging infrastructure. File and print
servers, domain controllers, and global catalog servers can be upgraded to Windows Server 2003
with no adverse impact on Exchange operations.
Upgrading with Microsoft SQL Server™ 7.0
In an effort to provide customers with security-enhanced products, Microsoft supports only
SQL Server 2000 with Service Pack 3 (SP3) or later and MSDE 2000 with SP3 or later on
Windows Server 2003. SQL Server 7.0 and MSDE 1.0 are not supported on Windows Server
2003. It is recommended that customers who run applications with SQL Server 7.0 and MSDE 1.0
should evaluate and upgrade to SQL Server 2000 and SQL Server Desktop Engine (also known
as MSDE 2000) respectively with SP3 on Windows Server 2003.
For more information on SQL Server support and upgrade information, see “Running SQL Server
on Windows Server 2003” on the SQL Server Web site at
http://www.microsoft.com/sql/howtobuy/windowsnetsupport.asp.
Hardware Considerations
As part of your upgrade plan, review and document the existing hardware configuration and
operating system of each domain controller that you want to upgrade. Use this information to
identify the computers that you can upgrade to Windows Server 2003 and the computers that you
must decommission or return to member server status. Keep decommissioned servers for
rollback servers in the event that you must roll back the upgrade.
Hardware and Driver Compatibility
It is a good idea to determine whether a system’s hardware is on the Hardware Compatibility List.
If not, search the hardware manufacturer’s Web site for updated drivers. When a driver is found,
check it for a signature. Driver signing is a multifaceted process in which device drivers are
verified through a series of tests administered by the Windows Hardware Quality Lab (WHQL).
Drivers that earn this certification are more robust and are preferred. Microsoft digitally signs
