Making an Inventory with Collector
Obtaining an inventory of all the applications running on a system can be performed by a simple
command-line tool, Collector, which is included with ACT 3.0. Collector is a client-side tool that
can be deployed to computers by copying the Collector.exe file to a floppy disk and installing on
the client computer, or through more advanced mechanisms like adding it to a logon script or
using Microsoft Systems Management Server (SMS). The goal of running Collector is to obtain a
complete inventory of all applications in the enterprise that need to be supported on Windows
Server 2003.
Running Collector
The data generated by Collector is stored in compressed .cab files by default or uncompressed
XML files if specified. The location of these files is controlled by using the command-line switches
when running the tool. It’s a good idea to create a network share first to store the inventory files,
and then run Collector on all the computers planned for upgrade. By default, if a location to store
the inventory files is not specified, the inventory files appear on the desktop of the user who
invoked Collector. The files are uniquely identifiable, so there is no need to worry about one
computer overwriting the data collected for another.
The Collector.exe file is located in the following folder:
