storage space. Volume Shadow Copy service is also supported with a public API, so developers
can write applications that use the features of this technology.
The majority of accidental file loss is the result of user error. When a user accidentally overwrites
or deletes a file, the result is usually lost time as the user recreates work or contacts a network
administrator to restore a file from backup. Users on Windows Server 2003 or the Windows XP
Professional operating system can access shadow copies of their files from within Windows
Explorer. This ability leads to improved productivity and a reduction in the number of support calls
for file restoration. Volume Shadow Copy services for users requires the Volume Shadow Copy
service client for Windows XP Professional, found on the Windows Server 2003 installation CD-
ROM.

Virtual Disk Services
Virtual Disk Services enables storage devices from different vendors to interoperate in Windows.
VDS has APIs to storage hardware and to management programs that manage the storage
hardware. Administrators can discover storage devices from multiple vendors and configure those
resources by using a unified interface. Without Virtual Disk Services, each vendor's storage
device typically provides its own management interface.
