Windows NT 4.0 Server Upgrade Guide 63
pass-through authentication provided by the domain controllers allows users and computers to be
authenticated in any domain in the forest. This authentication enables users or computers to
access resources in any domain in the forest for which they have the appropriate permissions.
Other than the enhanced access to any other domains in the forest, clients are not aware of any
changes in the domain.
Sample Active Directory Migration Plan
There are many ways to upgrade a Windows NT 4.0 domain to a Windows Server 2003 Active
Directory domain. In the sample upgrade scenario that follows, one such way is documented. The
sample upgrade scenario has been kept rather simple to fit in the context of this guide. It does,
however, serve as a roadmap for many typical Windows NT 4.0 upgrades. Planning is the key
component. A solid plan helps an upgrade team with even the most complicated Windows NT
upgrade scenario.
In this sample, HGF Properties is a fictitious Southern California-based company with four
locations. The company would like to upgrade from their current Windows NT 4.0 structure to
Windows Server 2003 and Active Directory. This section walks through some of the steps
involved in the upgrade of a small, single-domain network.
Figure 27 shows the current sites, domain, and servers for HGF Properties.
