MAKING YOUR OWN ADAPTER OR ACTIVE PROBE
One can easily make custom transducer adapters or active probes for the CyberAmp. For each
channel, the 15-pin D connector provides a ±15 V power supply, a +5.000 V precision excitation
voltage, and positive and negative inputs that will directly accept most signals.
In its simplest form, the custom adapter can use a plain 15-pin male D connector, available from any
electronic components vendor.
In order to make a SmartProbe adapter that will allow the CyberAmp to recognize the type of probe
and to read back critical information such as details of calibration, the user should obtain from Axon
Instruments an AI 490 connector kit that includes the memory chip and a circuit board built into a
15-pin D connector.
The design of the analog processing circuitry of the custom probe will be determined by the
individual application. Axon cannot anticipate all possible applications, but we have compiled a
selection of application circuits as a general guide.
Connector
Probes in the AI 400 range use a 15-pin D-SUB male connector. The pin assignments are:
1 Positive input
2 Negative input
3 Digital ground
4 +5.000 V excitation
5 EEPROM serial clock
6 Electrode Test
7 Unassigned
8 -15 V
9 Positive shield drive
10 Analog ground
11 Unassigned
12 EEPROM serial data
13 EEPROM probe select
14 Keyway
15 +15 V
The +15 V and -15 V power supplies and the +5.000 precision excitation voltage can each supply a
total of 200 mA into all probes combined. Each of these supplies is short-circuit proof, but care
should be taken not to short the supplies to each other.
The positive shield drive is a buffered version of the positive input signal. It can be used for driving
the shield of a coaxial cable. However, it is rarely used; it is more common to connect the shields to
the analog ground.
