INTRODUCTION
The CyberAmp 380 provides the front-end signal conditioning for a versatile computer-based data
acquisition system. It is a comprehensive eight-channel instrument suitable for almost all forms of
laboratory signal amplification, filtering, and transduction.
The signal-conditioning functions performed by the CyberAmp 380 are gain amplification, AC and
DC coupling, low-pass filtering, notch filtering, overload detection, offset removal, and DC level
shifting.
The CyberAmp 380 was designed as a completely programmable instrument. Although other
computer-based data acquisition systems automate the acquisition of analog data, they still require the
manual entry of acquisition parameters (such as gain, offset, and filter frequency). However, when
the data acquisition system includes the CyberAmp 380, all external signal-conditioning parameters
are directly controlled by the acquisition software and are therefore known to the software at all times.
Even the characteristics of each probe attached to an input are known to the data acquisition software,
because each probe contains a small memory chip (called an EEPROM) that holds information such
as its type, measurement units (e.g., degrees C) and scale factor (e.g., 100°C/V).
The CyberAmp 380 was designed to be versatile. It therefore accommodates a wide variety of input
sources. In many cases specialized measurement instruments are not needed. For example, in other
recording setups, each bridge strain gauge must be connected to an expensive bridge amplifier module
and then to the acquisition system. With the CyberAmp 380, the strain gauge can be directly
connected to the CyberAmp itself, which is configured through software as a bridge amplifier.
For transducers that cannot be directly connected to the CyberAmp, Axon Instruments created the
AI 400 series of SmartProbes. A SmartProbe plugs into the CyberAmp and adapts an electrode or
transducer. For laboratory measurement tasks, scientific data measurement is extremely diverse and
ever changing. To accommodate the many available transducers and sources, the CyberAmp has a
general-purpose input connector that provides the essential power-supplies and signal inputs that are
required to support measurement techniques ranging from the simple to the exotic. We also offer a
SmartProbe kit with which a SmartProbe can be made for any transducer. For common laboratory
signal conditioning tasks, the CyberAmp 380 was additionally provided with conventional BNC
inputs. Thus, the output from virtually any instrument can be processed through the CyberAmp
before being transmitted to an A/D converter or other recording system.
